Roma Inclusion Decade 2005-2015 launched in Sofia

Wednesday 2 February 2005

Stanislav Stankevic, president of the World Roma Council, arrived in Sofia yesterday for the opening of the Roma Inclusion Decade 2005-2015. Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro are the founding countries of the Decade. The most important thing to find out will be whether the Roma people will become partners or just a subject of attention under this initiative, Stankevic said.

The council’s main policiy is related to Roma education. Asked whether this would mean that they will fight for the opening of a Roma university, Stankevic said yes. There are two ways to attract young Roma to the universities; one is to create a world Roma university, where Roma people from all over the world will have access to distance learning. Another way is to introduce education in ‘Roma history and culture’ in Bulgarian universities, Stankevic said.
