Joao Pedro Stedile, the leader of the Sem Terra Movement (Landless Peasant Movement, MST) in Brazil, pointed out that education will empower landless peasants and is a key to their economic independence. He related that MST started a campaign for the democratisation of education and is encouraging its members to go to school.

At present the movement runs schools for 300,000 children and has agreements with 42 Brazilian universities. 400 activists are doing their PhD and postgraduate studies and 52 landless women and men study at the Latin American School of Medicine, in Cuba.

Stedile presented these achievements at the World Forum for Dignity that took place in the framework of the World Social Forum, on January 29.
