WSF: The Forum is good news for local artisans

How could it be possible that crafts, made entirely by hand and produced with the help of the families of the artisans starting from the children to the grandparents cost only R$2-3 (about one Euro) each? About the same price of a cone of ice cream?

Amidst this reality, the World Social Forum is stimulating local economy. Artisans from neighbouring countries prepare to come to Porto Alegre many months before the Forum starts. They make various types of souvenir items and then send a couple of people from the community to sell them at the Forum.

“It is our chance to encourage continuous craft production and at the same time invigorate the local economy,” says Angel, an artisan from Uruguay. “We have a big crafts market in Montevideo and all my colleagues have given me items to sell. I am the only one who took the trip to come here and sell the goods.”
