The 2007 World Social Forum will be in Africa, 2006 WSF will be decentralised

Sunday 30 January 2005 by Dafne Plou

The World Social Forum International Committee, composed of representatives of civil society organisations from around the world, have decided to hold the World Social Forum 2007 in Africa. On the other hand, the World Social Forum 2006 will be held in four continents.

Each region will be asked to come up with proposals for the countries that will host this new format of the social forum. The objective of holding the forum in such a format is to decentralise the organisation of this huge event. In addition, it is hoped that this format will give more organisations and people the opportunity to participate in its planning and development.

Editor’s note: The exact location of the 2007 WSF has not yet been decided.

    Dear Colleagues and Organizers of the 2006 WSF:

    Please note that I would like to become involved in the planning and implementation of the ’06 event.

    Could you give me ideas about how one "plugs in" to the process? Specifically, list the ways in which people can contribute to the great work in which you are engaged.

    Sincerely,

    Steve Salmony

    • FOR DISCUSSION: Are potential challenges soon to be posed to humanity by global human growth trends?
      3 June 2005, by Steven Earl Salmony, Ph.D., M.P.A.
      At one of the four sites of the 2006 WSF, would it be possible for me to assist in the organization of a symposium that examines emerging scientific data regarding (1) over-growth of economic production capabilities, (2) per human over-consumption of resources and (3) human overpopulation? Mounting scientific evidence appears to indicate all life depends upon the integrity of Earth and its environs; that our planetary home is finite, has limited resources, and is not like some sort of cornucopian teat; that human beings cannot much longer, much less forever, act toward this wondrous tiny celestial orb like a devouring suckling at the breast; that the current ever expanding human economy is designed and operated as a patently unsustainable global pyramid scheme; that per capita over-consumption and human over-production are untenable on so large a scale and rate of growth as we find in the world now; that the limitations of the Earth are to be accepted by the human population; and that certain unbridled collective activities of humankind are to be regulated carefully, skillfully and humanely for the sake of environmental health, that which is wild, and the wellbeing of current and coming generations of life to this good Earth. Thank you.
    • > Summary of a Program of Action to respond ably to global human "over-growth" activities
      18 June 2005, by Steven Earl Salmony, Ph.D., M.P.A.

      1. AWAREness of emerging scientific data related to increasing per human consumption patterns worldwide, the seemingly endless expansion of the predominant world economy and the growing absolute numbers of human beings on Earth;

      2. Adequate understanding of these data;

      3. Unconditional acceptance of reality, as given to us by God in the form of scientific understandings; and

      4. Responsible action, in keeping with human and earthly limitations.

    • World Human Population, Global Food Availability and the Re-distribution of Food Resources from Abundant Harvests
      10 August 2005, by Steven Earl Salmony, Ph.D., M.P.A.

      At their current scale and rate of growth, absolute global human population numbers, per human consumption, and economic production/distribution capabilities appear to be going up rapidly. Can this tiny planet much longer, much less forever, sustain such increases? Do unbridled, world-encompassing human actitivies threaten biodiversity with extinction, the Earth with irreversible degradation and, perhaps, humanity with endangerment?

      If so, what does it mean to respond humanely and ably to looming global challenges?

      Hello,

      I’m checking in to see if there are any more details as to the dates and site of the 2007 WSF.

      Thanks
