President may veto budget over cuts to people with disabilities

Tuesday 30 November 2004

President Georgi Purvanov said that he might veto Budget 2005 because of what he described as anti-social elements in it. The budget ‘is letting out air’, Purvanov said. The clause he opposes provides for monthly payment to parents of children with permanent disabilities to be cut from 70 to 40 per cent of the minimum wage. Let us not save money by getting rid of the rights of disabled people, Purvanov said. He called on MPs to restore the previous legislation when the second reading stage of the budget was reached. Since 2001, the money spent on disabled people has increased 23 times.
