A national protest will be held in Bulgaria to speak out against the high prices of the Bulgarian mobile phone operators.

The mobile operators, MTel and Globul, operate as a shared monopol in Bulgaria. Their users are outraged from the high prices by the fact that there is no real competition on the market, prices are higher than many other European countries and yet, mobile phone operators have made more profit in 2003 than the lucrative BTK (the recently privatized national Bulgarian phone operator).

“We have nothing against profit, but this profit is being made with the help of excessively high prices”, wrote the organizers in their call for protest.

The users of mobile phones in Bulgaria are therefore asked to turn off their phones on Monday the 6th of September 2004, from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 16:00.

It should also be noted that this day is a national holiday in Bulgaria and therefore this protest aims mostly to show the mobile operators the number of discontent customers.

Other activities are planned and the organizers feel confident. The boycott should be repeated on every following Wednesday until prices are changed. Their initial call for protests refers to similar activities in Italy.
