Campaign against Production, Distribution and Sale of GMO in Bulgaria |
At 7 p.m. on 2nd June at Sofia University "St.Kl.Ohridsky" the Environmental Association "Za zemiata" together with the Council of Students organised a discussion and showed films about genetically modified organisms (GMO) and food, running danger.
At the last moment the hall, where the event had to take place was changed, and the new one turned out to be small for all people, interested in the topic. There were more than 150 people and many others, who could not get in.
The greatest part of the audience was obviously well-informed on the topic. There were representatives of different points of view, which were also expressed in the films, thus the debate ended to be very interesting. Ms Svetla Nikolova from the "Agrolink" movement described briefly the situation around the law about GMO, which was the reason for the whole campaign of the recently formed coalition of organizations, parties, researchers and citizens "Bulgaria - a Zone, Free from GMO" . There was also a representative of "Agrobio Institute", the institute, which has taken an active part in creating the law, and which works with Monsanto - a biotechnological corporation, selling GMO, at the same time. His words made the audience absolutely furious.
However, this event was viewed upon as an informative meeting by the organizers, so the stress was laid on the films. People were invited to take part in the up-coming debate on the topic at the Sofia City Art Gallery (in front of the National Theatre) at 7 p.m. on 9th June. On the previous day (8th June) there is going to be a march from "St.Al. Nevsky" sqare to the Presidency. Demonstrants are going to circulate a petition against production, distribution and sale of GMO in Bulgaria, which will be granted to the President and at the National Assembly.
