Bulgarian Social NGOs

The opening up of society after the political changes in Bulgaria in 1989 has produced a large proliferation of NGOs, most of which are very small. Only a few of them have national dimensions and often even those working in the same field do not know of each other’s existence.

This can make it very difficult for social NGOs from other countries to know who to work with. There is a widespread agreement amongst Bulgarian NGOs on the need to overcome these problems by building networks to establish contact with each other and with similar organisations in other parts of the world.

In the Autumn of 2002, IRBF has met with 20 of the larger social NGOs in Bulgaria and more than 60 others completed a questionnaire circulated by IRBF, which aim was to identify the needs and the access of the Bulgarian NGOs to information.

IRBF is actively working with a wide range of social NGOs to build a national network using the Internet. As this network grows we will be able to create the conditions for these NGOs to publish their activities and initiatives via the Social Rights Bulgaria website.

In the meantime, we are in a good position to assist social NGOs outside Bulgaria in contacting and partnering with Bulgarian NGOs working on similar issues to them. If you need such help please contact us at irbf@ngo-bg.org.

You may also consult another Internet Rights Bulgaria project, NGO-bg.org, which consists in providing Bulgarian social NGOs with basic and ready to use websites. Please note that the project is currently at an early stage of development and hosts a few test participants.
