Project for bike paths in Sofia

Wednesday 18 April 2007

Bike riders in Sofia may soon get special lanes for their bicycles if a proposal unanimously voted by the municipal commission on children, youth and sport is seconded by the City Council.

The commission proposes that the administration of Mayor Boiko Borissov is asked to build six bike routes from the city centre to its fringes. The design should be ready within a couple of months.

There will be six routes, all starting from one point in the cenre and going south, southwest, southeast, north, west and east.

The project should include bike parking facilities near 40 municipal schools situated along the bike routes and in the stations of the underground.

Also, the Sofia City Council is expected to make the mayor’s administration introduce a requirement whereby bike lanes should be included when new streets are designed and when existing streets are repaired. The Mayor’s administration will have to create and publish a map of Sofia bicycle routes.

Among the motives for this project are the need to find ways to improve the health status of Sofianites, reduce the automobile traffic and pollution in the city.
