A mere 10 per cent of Bulgarians will spend more than 100 leva on Christmas and New Year presents, a nation-wide survey of the National Public Opinion Centre (NPOC) shows. These are mainly people aged between 30 and 50, highly educated, wealthy and citizens of the capital.

The highest number of Bulgarians (38 per cent) will manage to set aside 20 leva for presents. Another 35 per cent intend to use 50 leva for presents, while 17 per cent are ready to spend between 50 and 100 leva, the survey shows.

The holidays at the end of the year are not only a time of big shopping but also one of charity campaigns and initiatives.

Bulgarians do not remain unmoved by the problems and sufferings of others and tend to show charity as much as their means allow, NPOC finds. Thirty-seven per cent of the interviewees said they would contribute to the Christmas charity campaigns while 45 per cent do not intend to participate.

Three-fourths of those who have set aside more than 200 leva for presents will also donate money for charity. One in every four that have prepared a mere 20 leva for presents declare intention to donate, the survey showed.

Two-thirds of the respondents said sending SMS is the most preferred means of donating. Seven per cent of Bulgarians, most frequently elderly, prefer purchasing goods in whose price donation is included. The wealthy prefer to donate money on account.
