Ten country comparative study of Enlargement, Gender and Governance

Wednesday 18 May 2005

The Centre for the Advancement of Women in Politics and the Institute of Governance, Public Policy and Social Research at Queen’s University Belfast were awarded a research grant by the European Commission’s Framework Five Programme to co-ordinate a ten country comparative study of Enlargement, Gender and Governance (known by the acronym EGG). The project seeks to analyse the extent to which representative institutions and other organizations enable women’s participation and representation in the political decision-making of EU candidate countries.

A multi-disciplinary team of predominantly women researchers from across Europe will analyse the political position of women in each of the ten Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) preparing for EU membership: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. An Italian political theorist, with expertise on the post-communist states, will help develop the conceptual framework and a comparative perspective.

The EGG website provides information about the objectives of the research, and gives a detailed work programme for the project’s three-year duration (1 December 2002-30 November 2005). It will be updated frequently with all of the research papers produced by the consortium, including country specific and comparative reports. The website also includes links to the institutional homes of all consortium members, as well as links to websites of relevant international organisations and related research projects.
