Conference: Dissolving Barriers - Intercultural Dialogue in Europe

4-8 May 2005, Rieti, Italy
Friday 11 March 2005
On the Web: UNITED
Refugees, detention centres, islamophobia, antisemitism, prejudice...

The enlargement of the European Union has brought new opportunities for many, but it also creates new divisions and inequalities. The borders of Fortress Europe have moved but the inhumane migration and asylum policies are still tightening upŠ In the difficult international climate stereotypes are reinforced and the fear of the "other" is a serious problem in Europe today.

Islamophobia and antisemitism, among others, are clearly on the rise across the continent. Cultural differences are often viewed as a threat to social stability, although they can be a source of diversity to be celebrated! Can "the clash of civilizations" be avoided if we realize that intercultural dialogue and mutual respect is the only way forward? Is there any inherent tension between the secular-liberal order of "modern" Europe and the more "traditional" model of society associated with (Muslim) migrants?

There is a need for an open debate about these interconnected issues. The next UNITED Conference will provide an informal forum for this important discussion. The debates will provoke reflection as well as give us an opportunity to think about solutions: to plan common actions and campaigns. UNITED invites nominations from representatives of non-governmental organisations active in the field of anti-racism, minority rights and intercultural dialogue.

The following issues have been selected for plenary sessions and discussions during the conference:

Fortress Europe: current tendencies in EU asylum policy
