OpenFest - the World Day of the Free Software started from Bulgaria! The Free Software had no celebration day... so far.

The day is September 14 (or the second Sunday of September), the place: many towns and cities in Bulgaria, Quèbec and USA.

The idea of the Free Software Associatio is to join events and initiatives, related to the Free software, all around the world. The Free softwareis not just a model for development of sotware, it is not only an industry, nor technology, it brings together the idea for the sharing, for a community. This is the idea, documentation and software sharing.

This is an initiative of the Bulgarian Free Software Association, supported by many partners and friends.

The special guests of the Sofia OpenFest event were:

- Harald Welte (NetFilter),
- Krzysztof Zaraska (Prelude IDS) and
- Zak Greant (MySQL AB).

Harald Welte is one of the five netfilter/iptables core team members, and is the current Linux 2.4.x firewalling maintainer.

Krzysztof Zaraska is one of the Prelude IDS main developers. He is the Prelude Database library maintainer and maintains the FreeBSD port also.

Zak Greant is ex-PHP developer and currently part of MySQL AB team, famous community advocate.

Program of presentations:

Yovko Lambrev (Free Software Association - Bulgaria): Bulgarian Free Software/Open Source Community. FSA-BG presentation

Harald Welte - netfilter/iptables presentation: Introduction/definition: Firewalls, Proxies, Packet Filters. Why a free software firewall? What can you do with netfilter/iptables? Who is behind the project? How to get involved?

Krzysztof Zaraska - Prelude IDS presentation: In recent years we could observe the development of various open source intrusion detection systems (IDS). However, their authors concentrate mainly on improving the detection technology (IDS sensors) and overlook the issue of using their products for controlling many machines in distributed environments. Prelude Hybrid IDS aims towards filling this gap, by creating a free (GPL) framework that can be used for centralized management of many IDS sensors distributed accross the network. The talk will contain a short introduction to Intrusion Detection Message Exchange Format specification, architectural overview of Prelude IDS, information about using Prelude for integrating various IDS products in large installations and practical observations regarding IDS interoperatibility problems.

Zak Greant (MySQL AB) - Abstract will be published later

Alexander Keremidarski (MySQL AB) - Abstract will be published later
