EU-Funding for Open Source development

A group of European research institutions and open source software companies announced to develop open source based tools. The aim of the project entitled “Environment for the Development and Distribution of Free Software” (EDOS) is to build software development and management tools that help to reduce the costs and the complexity by integrating Linux into large IT environments.

The open source development is mainly funded with an amount of € 2.2 million (total amount of € 3.4 million) by the European Union. The project is scheduled to cover two and a half years.

The participants of the project are the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (known as INRIA), Tel-Aviv University, the University of Zurich, the University of Geneva, the University of Paris 7, the Linux software vendor Mandrakesoft, the software vendor Nexedi of France, NUXEO France, CSP Torino and SOT of Finland.
